Best fish and chips in Scotland

The "Anstruther Fish Bar" in Anstruther, Scotland, is an award-winning restaurant and takeaway that has established itself as one of the best spots for fish and chips in the United Kingdom. Located on the picturesque harbor front of the small fishing town of Anstruther in the East Neuk of Fife, the venue combines a long family tradition in the fishing industry with a passion for fresh, sustainably sourced seafood. Since 2003, it has been run by Argo Fish, a small family business from St Monans specializing in sourcing the best catches directly from the market daily. The restaurant is popular not only with locals but also with tourists from around the world, including prominent guests such as Prince William, Tom Hanks, and Robert De Niro, highlighting its international reputation.

Award-winning restaurant in Anstruther

The cuisine at Anstruther Fish Bar focuses on fresh Scottish seafood prepared with a special emphasis on quality and sustainability. Particularly noteworthy is the "Haddock and Chips", a classic where the haddock is fried in a secret crispy batter – the result is a tender fish with a light, non-greasy coating that perfectly showcases the natural flavor. The "Lemon Sole" is also a favorite, impressing with its delicate texture and hint of lemon and often chosen as an alternative to the traditional haddock. For those seeking something different, the "Dressed Local Crab" provides a fresh, light option sourced directly from local fishermen. The thick, fluffy chips that accompany each dish are made from locally grown potatoes and complete the experience. In addition to the main courses, a homemade ice cream offered at the integrated ice cream parlor is often appreciated as a sweet ending.

Fresh seafood by the harbor

The ambiance of the restaurant is nautically inspired and can accommodate approximately 50 guests who can enjoy a magnificent view of the Firth of Forth and the bustling harbor through large windows. The interior is bright and clean, with a fresh, maritime touch complemented by TV screens showcasing the fishing traditions of the East Neuk. For takeaway customers, there is the option to enjoy the food on benches opposite the restaurant, where you can watch the fishing boats landing crabs and lobsters. This connection to the local fishing industry is a central part of the identity of Anstruther Fish Bar – the restaurant was the first fish and chip shop in the UK to receive accreditation from the Marine Stewardship Council, emphasizing its commitment to sustainable fishing.

Traditional Scottish fish restaurant

Service is an essential part of the success. The team is often praised for their friendliness and efficiency, even when long queues form on busy days – a sign of the restaurant's enduring popularity. Particularly in the summer months, demand can be so high that up to 40 stone of haddock are served in a single day, equivalent to about 1200 portions. The staff strives to provide guests with a warm experience and is available to answer questions about the region or the origin of the food. For children, there are activity sheets and a special menu, making the venue family-friendly.

Sustainable fishing and quality

Over the years, Anstruther Fish Bar has earned numerous awards, including four times the title of "Best Fish and Chip Shop in Scotland" and the prestigious "UK Fish & Chip Shop of the Year" in 2009, beating over 1000 competitors. It was also named "Café of the Year" in 2005 by Les Routiers and received the Seafish Friers Award for Excellence for over a decade. This recognition reflects the consistent quality ensured through the close collaboration with the fishing family Argofish, who select the freshest catches every morning.

Fish was very fresh, chips were great. Unlike many fish and chip restaurants they have haddock, monkfish and sole. Also the haddock can be battered, breaded or grilled. Try their homemade ice cream as well.

Everything here was terrifying and shockingly bad. Staff just couldn't care less, fish was awful served with the cheapest bread possible. I'm so angry at paying a premium price for frankly crap!!!!!

1hr 10 min wait, I’d say not worth it personally, ended up with rock hard chips and went cold so quickly! Oh well! Maybe better next time :)

Visited here today had been a few times a couple of years ago, decided to try it again today after seeing a review on tick toc, 2 Fish Suppers for my husband and me came quite a journey well I was very very disappointed the fish what fish there was hardly any of it, it was mostly batter, I can actually say you could not even taste the fish, I love a fish supper and normally the fish is quite thick and so tasty as to some of the places I have been and tried. I do not normally post negative reviews it’s normally good reviews I post, but I have posted this because I can actually say it was probably the worst fish supper I have actually had, definitely very big let down.

Nice fish and chips but can’t see what the hype is about. Dined in. It doesn’t accommodate fatties as the table and chairs are bolted to the ground. Yanks beware. Nice and clean

Was there again on Tuesday. I have to agree with a good few of the other reviews. Its just not the same now. Chips were like ones you'd make in your pan at home, the fish the same as you'd get at a city centre chippie. A shame.

Highly efficient team, we got the seafood platter and it was more than enough to feed 2 adults and 2 children under 5.The smoked haddock/haddock were exceptional - the batter was really light and airy. Skip the drinks as thought the white wine tasted like vinegar. Very efficient staff who waited on the tables like pros.

Oh my god, what can I say, I've been all over the UK and these are the best fish and chips yet, staff are always lovely too! Anyone who visits me I make sure to take them for the best chippy they'll have in their life!
